WHAT IS ETHICAL FASHION?
There are a lot of Buzz Words out there to keep track of in this day-and-age, but Ethical Fashion is definitely one every consumer should know. Ethical Fashion usually focuses on labor laws and Fair Trade Labor with fair wages and ethical working conditions. But I like to talk about Sustainable Fashion, because it incorporates is the holistic revolution within an industry, where each part of the business is working towards a goal of both environmental consciousness and ethical practices.
This means that a company's impact on the environment and the world, including waste management, human resources, factories, transportation, and also the product itself, is engineered to be an environmentally and ethically conscious process that will be able to sustain itself for the years to come.
WHY SHOP SUSTAINABLY?
I'm a huge believer in how consumer behavior can successfully drive the market place. By choosing sustainable brands over others, you are giving a signal to CEOs that if they don't change their company's practices for the better, they won't be able to earn your purchase. If a company is losing money, they need no other initiative to change their ways, and all it takes is a little conscious decision making on your part.
The holidays are a great time to do this. with everyone clamoring to get your attention with fancy ads and marketing campaigns (including huge sales that are Oh So Tempting!) you can send a huge message that all the advertisements in the world won't win over a population driven by activism and awareness in their hearts.
Look for Fair Trade labels, Organic Cotton markers, Made Of Recycled Materials, and Made In The USA for some easy markers on what to buy this season.
